InsomniaInsomnia or sleeplessness is common to almost
everyone due to stress, heartburn, or excess caffeine or alcohol. However, chronic insomnia occurs when an
individual has trouble falling asleep, maintaining sleep or experiencing non-restorative
sleep on an ongoing basis with no reason.
Almost 90% of individuals have difficulty sleeping in their lives and
one third of them suffer from insomnia in any given year. 9% of that group suffer from chronic insomnia,
which truly interferes with normal life and can have serious effects on their
physical and psychological health. Medically there are two types of insomnia: initial insomnia (difficulty falling
asleep) and maintenance insomnia,
the inability to stay asleep all night.
Many people suffer from both. The
most typical and familiar cause of insomnia is simply mental overstimulation or
emotional upset, but sleep disturbances are also a common side effect of many
medical drugs. Alcohol, while acting as
a sedative, creates a less restful, less refreshing sleep. Other common factors include pain, menopause,
PMS, acid reflux, hypoglycaemia, skin disorders, restless leg syndrome and
children that are teething or colicky. Signs and symptoms of insomnia may include: ·
Difficulty falling asleep
at night ·
Waking up during the
night ·
Waking up too early ·
Daytime fatigue or
sleepiness ·
Daytime irritability
